Mikrokosmos lokale Niederlassungen

The Microcosm of Local Subsidiaries

30. June 2026

Why international organizations often function differently than expected

Is your subsidiary or local representative office really operating the way you expect it to as a
CEO? And do you truly understand the root causes behind success – or problems – in all their detail?

In mechanical engineering, as well as in many other industries, companies operate internationally through their own subsidiaries and local entities. At headquarters level, management often relies on assumptions such as: “Local management understands our strategy and implements it accordingly.”

Point of no return im After Sales

The “Point of No Return” in After Sales

16. March 2026

Why many companies recognize it too late – and what it really costs

Anyone working in After Sales or close to the customer knows this situation well: A customer calls because something has gone wrong and urgent support is needed. The typical initial reaction in many organizations- especially outside the After Sales function- is predictable: “The customer is at fault.”

This reaction serves two purposes at the same time: It protects the company – and it avoids work. Because taking a customer issue seriously means investigating, asking questions, checking data, involving interfaces and departments.

In short: working like Sherlock Holmes and putting one’s own current tasks on hold. Yet the most important question is often not asked at all: Why is the customer calling in the first place?

In times of limited resources, customers do not complain without reason. There is almost
always a real issue behind the call.

Between External Challenges and Internal Barriers – Why Looking Inward is Worthwhile

18. December 2025

Recently, during an internal discussion, we touched on a topic that has been on both of our minds independently for quite aome time.

As is often the case, the conversation initially revolved around the well-known challenges: high energy costs, increasing bureaucracy, rising labor and wage expenses, and the overall difficult situation of German industry.

However, the longer we talked, the clearer one point became – one that is often overlooked in many discussions:
A significant share of the problems companies face is self-inflicted.

K-Show 2025 – Reflections, Experiences, and Strategic Insights

21. November 2025

With the last invoices written and settled, the K-Show 2025 is now officially concluded from an organizational perspective. Yet, its impact lingers in my mind. It’s time to draw a personal conclusion and share my experiences along with some key observations.

Communication in Organizations

12. November 2025

Misunderstandings, friction losses, and untapped potential

Communication is widely regarded as one of the core skills of modern organizations – and at the same time, one of the biggest weaknesses in day-to-day operations. Despite having more communication channels than ever before, companies still experience daily misunderstandings, delays, and friction that cost time, energy, and ultimately money.

A seemingly simple everyday example illustrates the problem clearly:
When asked, “When will you be there?” the answer is, “I’ll be there shortly.”

For the sender, this statement is correct – from their perspective. The recipient, however, interprets it differently. The result: mismatched expectations, frustration, and wasted time. What is said – and what is received – are often two different things.

Die Mäusestrategie - Rätsel, wie die Maus den Käse findet

The Cheese Strategy – A Brief Perspective

22. October 2025

The story is deliberately simple:

Two mice and two little people (“dwarfs”) search a maze every day and successfully find cheese – the symbol of success, security, and comfort. For a long time, the cheese is reliably available. But one day, it is gone.

The change did not happen suddenly. There were signs.

The mice react instinctively: they set off immediately to search for new cheese. The dwarfs, however, analyze, doubt, cling to the past, and hope that the cheese will return. Only much later does one of them finally set out – and eventually finds new cheese.

The core message: Change happens – whether we notice it or not.

Spare Parts Availability – The Underestimated Competitive Factor in After Sales

13. September 2025

“We need the part immediately!”

I heard this sentence countless times during my time as an after-sales manager. And very often, it was not about complex assemblies or special solutions, but about seemingly insignificant spare parts – components whose absence is enough to bring an entire production line to a standstill.

It is precisely these parts that pose major challenges for purchasing, planning, and warehouse organizations in mechanical engineering – and at the same time represent a key lever for customer satisfaction and competitive differentiation.

International Expansion – Agent, Distributor, or Own Subsidiary?

28. August 2025

For many mid-sized machinery manufacturers, expanding into international markets represents a significant opportunity – and at the same time one of the greatest entrepreneurial challenges. New markets promise growth, closer proximity to
customers, and risk diversification. At the same time, the decisions involved are complex and often far-reaching.

In many cases, international expansion is a one-time or infrequent decision. As a result, in-house experience is limited – making the process particularly demanding. Mistakes can only be corrected later at considerable financial and organizational cost.

What Truly Makes After Sales in the Machinery Industry Successful?

7. August 2025

For customers in the machinery and plant engineering industry, three factors matter most after the machine has been sold: price, quality – and speed. While price and product quality are often at the center of attention, in after sales it is increasingly
response speed that determines customer satisfaction, loyalty, and repeat business.

Whether it is a spare parts inquiry, technical support, a customized solution, or a simple follow-up question: long response times are now a clear competitive disadvantage. Customers increasingly compare service performance across brands – and expect fast, reliable answers.

Competition in After Sales – Do You Really Know Your Market Players?

2. July 2025

A recent in-depth conversation with a former colleague prompted me to summarize my observations on competition in after sales—a topic that is present in many companies, yet often underestimated.

After-sales managers in the machinery and plant engineering industry oversee a portfolio that ranges from a simple M4 screw to complex retrofit projects. This wide spectrum alone highlights how demanding the field truly is.
